April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Getting to know your own mouth can seem kind of silly BUT stats show that up to 40% of people who are diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancer will not survive longer than 5 years due to late detection.

So it’s our job as a health professionals/dental hygienists to use our knowledge and spread awareness.

It is NO longer just older aged people who DRINK and SMOKE that are at a higher risks for developing oral cancer. We are seeing an increase in oral cancer patients that are YOUNG, healthy teens and adults due to the increase in HPV (Human Papillomavirus 16).

So if it has been a while since you’ve seen your dental professional, or even your family doctor – take this as a sign to call and make an appointment.
